Steve Hackett’s third solo album was his first to feature his touring band and spawned several concert staples, like “Every Day,” “Clocks,” and the title track. The Tabletoppers discuss with friend-of-the-podcast and author David Priess, and hear from Steve himself as he recalls the story behind each track.

So excited to have a new long podcast from you guys…really love them
Thanks, Kevin! Those are our favorite types of shows to do, and a few more to come this year.
Gents, did a long for me 28 mile bike ride on Saturday of which this episode made up my listening accompaniment. Really enjoyed the discussion and was especially fun having Steve’s input too. Thanks.
Thanks, Mike! Glad you made it home safely from the trek – we don’t need a second ballad of the decomposing man! 😉
Thanks for another great podcast, guys. I enjoyed the in-depth chat in two parts during two (long!) walks. I now have a new appreciation for this Steve album – good job!
Btw, we flew to Glasgow from Dublin last week to see the latest Musical Box tour. They were excellent. A fantastic recreation of the Mirrors tour. We had an amazing night. Highly recommended to any fans reading this👍
Great to hear that you loved the show! Mike and I are going to see it in October here in New Jersey 🙂
During the discussion about Spectral Mornings and lyrics I guess you weren’t aware of this beautiful version https://youtu.be/U49cwM7b1Wk?is=0sAEsPOgtTMAgxsL
Aware but the neurons weren’t firing to make the connection to the episode! (Brain farts are becoming more plentiful with age!) We do discuss it in our follow up episode that has the full interview with Steve – available Wed June 24.
In the podcast you were talking about the fact that spectral mornings was supposed to have vocals. And that you couldn’t imagine how that would be like and that it is a good thing Steve chose not to add vocals.
But there is a version with vocals. In 2015 David Longdon and Rob Reed made a version for a Parkinson aid. I think Nick d’Virgilio and mister Hackett himself are on it to. I rather like it, though the original version is off course unbeatable.

Thanks, Maurice – in Episode 85, after the full conversation with Steve Hackett, we touch on the 2015 version and play bits of it. We enjoy but it, but like you, there is nothing like the original 🙂
