Lived this episode! Welcome back to Stacy. I started with Phil and Genesis with Face Value and Abacab, but followed a pretty similar path to you folk from there. This album is in my DNA, too.
Sussudio – Great fun track, horns make it for me.
Only you know and I know – Doesn’t do a lot for me and yes Darryl’s guitar is too thin.
Long long way to go – I get Mike’s weird vibe idea, but you too cleanly produced to be really weird (family and the fishing net anyone?)
I don’t wanna know – works better than #2, but still not a standout compared to others.
One more night – pretty and melancholy, but I love that closing sax solo the best.
Don’t lose my number – fun, well made story song, and I like Darryl’s guitar better on this one. Hasn’t aged as well as others.
Who said I would? – Glad to hear there are other fans of this, great percussion.
D.A.S.T.A? – Right on the same frequency as Stacy worth this one.
Inside out – A great rock song, which Phil doesn’t do a lot of on his solo work. And Tom’s comment on the little bit of swing, yep.
Take me home – Timeless. Great percussion and lyrics, production overall. I do wish they mixed the backing vocals up some more though.
We said hello goodbye – I like it, wish the intro was more clearly connected to the main song more though.
Looking forward to But Seriously, it’s equal in quality I’d say.
Awesome to have Stacy visit! Could not have imagined you all reviewing “Jacket” without her, so happy I don’t have to.
I concur with most all points stated, esp Daryl’s guitar sound. I called it angry underwater soprano buzzsaw, so not far from Stacy’s grumpy bandsaw. He has a great, full sound live either solo and with Genesis, so my only explanation was that Hugh guided him to a thinner sound that didn’t clash with the bigger drum and block chord keyboard frequencies. I’ve had that discussion with producers too.
Loved this episode, and so grateful that Mike and Tom have revitalized the Tabletop. Please keep ‘em coming!

Very funny and enjoyable episode guys, really enjoyed this one. Great work! You’re forensic analysis of these albums is fantastic. Thank you for putting in the time and effort; it really adds to the podcasts and gives them great depth. I’m still re-listening to ones I’ve already heard even though I haven’t listened to them all yet! I love cherry-picking which one to do next.
I was a bit young when NJR came out so it kind of passed me by. I’ve always and still feel it’s too dated for me – probably just too overplayed for my liking. I’m giving it another go though now and I’m starting to reappraise it after your informed comments.
It will never surpass ‘…But Seriously’ though – a brilliant album that still holds up well and hasn’t really dated at all for me. Has a lot more meat on it and all the tracks are excellent. It’s his best solo album hands down, IMHO.
Looking forward (hopefully) to your expert analysis on that one in the future sometime.
