Supper’s Ready, what else?! Second would be Horizons. Btw check out the lovely cover version by Barbara Chrzaszcz, former violinist in Ray Wilson’s band: http://tinyurl.com/pthukpn
I love tracks like Can-Utility and Coastliners, Get Em Out By Fridat, and Watcher of the Skies, but I suspect Supper’s Ready will catch a lot of the votes.
I always think of Supper’s Ready as many short songs rather than one (even though yes, I know the credits say it’s just one song).
But with so many different parts, almost everyone will find a few parts they like and therefore choose it as their favourite “song”.
I actually went for Can-Utility here – love it as a complete individual song. However I don’t like the way the remastered version brings Gabriel’s final “where they fell” (3:23) to the foreground and cuts it off so abruptly. I think the original (where the vocal blended into the music and became “endless”) was far more effective.
Had to go with “Supper’s Ready” for the immensely inspirational and innovative creation that it is, but really, I have a tough time choosing because this album is so chock full of great songs. There’s the iconic “Watcher of the Skies,” the wry “Get ‘Em Out by Friday,” the superbly musical “Can-Utility and the Coastliners,” Steve’s timeless and beautiful “Horizons,” and the oft overlooked “Time Table.”
This is where I really think it’s a shame you don’t have a multi-choice poll, because I really think Supper’s Ready will be a shoo-in because of its sheer length and ambition. I voted for it because, honestly, it’s my favourite part of Foxtrot, but I would have liked to give some kudos to Time Table and Can-Utility as well.
Watcher Of The Skies, hands down. Supper’s Ready is far and away better experienced on Seconds Out. In the 70s, me and my buddy used to honk the opening to Watcher whenever we drove in front of each other’s house. I’m sure the neighbors loved us. 😉
Forgive me if it seems I’m just being contrary but if I had to pick just one song from Foxtrot to listen to again and again it would be “Time Table”. I know, not the most popular track. But for me it’s everything I love about early Genesis – evocative imagery, beautiful, sad lyrics and a great tune. Never heard it live yet, which is a shame.

Wow, great cover, Sonke! Thanks for sharing!
Oops, correction: it is Alicja Chrzaszcz playing, not Barbara…

…tough picking a fave on this one…they all represent Genesis’ songwriting at its best…

Thanks for pointing that out – will have to compare the two versions before recording this weekend!

Had to go with Supper, the greatest prog epic of all time from one of the greatest albums ever recorded!
And it’s a great track to Karaoke to … 😉
Sitting watching “sum of the parts” and reminded just how amazing supper’s ready really is closely followed by watcher of the skies

Very cool! Hey, it’s a MUCH better honk than “shave and a haircut – two bits!” 🙂

It definitely sticks in your head (I listened to the album this morning and that’s the tune that’s stuck with me!)
How about posting the poll results, since the poll is now closed? Same applies to the poll for “Melt”.
The “Melt” results will be posted tomorrow, “Foxtrot” later in the week. Of course, results are always available at the end of every podcast. 🙂
