Have to give an honorable mention to the unplugged version of “Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore”.

Love the podcast, heard all episodes – keep up the good
work for the legions of the Genesis fans all the the world.
As for No Jacket Required, Inside and Out is the stand out track on my list, although We Said Hello Goodbye is a really close 2nd. I don’t think you permit ties!

Another tough decision… since that album was so ubiquitous back in the mid ’80s and the singles were seemingly everywhere, I’ve tended to favor the songs that didn’t receive radio or MTV exposure. For my choice, I’m going to go with “Long Long Way To Go.” While the rest of “No Jacket” is musically bright and uplifting, with “We Said Hello Goodbye” being an exception, “Long” serves as a welcome contrast. Also, along with Phil and Peter, who’s voice personified the ’80s more than Sting’s? Phil and Sting blend well together. As a huge fan of Phil’s drumming, it’s challenging to choose a song that features only a drum machine, but I’m going for it!

Inside out, no question! Big, hallmark Collins drum sound! Followed by one more night, love the DX7 sound, great video too.

My favorite track used to be Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore because of the drums (and how everyone was getting divorced while I was listening to it!), but over time Inside Out has grown on me, especially the live version for the Serious Tour.

Sussudio is a brilliant pop track, Inside Out is very strong also, although the live version from Berlin is amazing. My favourite track of his entire solo canon, however, is Take Me Home.

I recently rediscovered Take Me Home which helped it win out over Inside Out and We Said Hello Goodbye. The lyrics were way more interesting than I remembered. I think the studio version is better than the live versions too!

WSHG wasn’t on the initial release (LP, cassette or CD). It’s a great song, deserved to be more than a B-side, but should it even be considered?

It wasn’t on the original LP or cassette, but was always featured on the CD as an “extra track.” It was a toss up to include it or not, but in the end we did.

Really enjoy your podcasts. I have listened to them all sometimes more than once! Feels like having a few mates over to discuss my favourite music. I love the fact that you do not express negative views on different make-ups of the band. Like me you can see the joy and quality in everything these musicians did in Genesis and their solo projects.

In terms of “No jacket required”…. It contains so many special moments and is a very consistent set of songs. My favourite is “We said hello goodbye” which just wins out for me. I really love the lyrics and they had a strong relevance when we recently moved a long way from our previous home to start a new life. I played the song as we set off to our new home and they packed a huge emotional punch…

    “Turn your head
    And don’t look back
Set your sails for a new horizon
Don’t turn around don’t look down
Oh there’s life across the tracks
And you know it’s really not surprising
It gets better when you get there oh…”

I also really like “Inside out” and “take me home”.

This is an iconic 1980s album and it easy to dismiss it for the reason. Phil is an amazing songwriter and musician and this album showcases what talent he has demonstrated over the years.

Tough choice! Amazing collection of amazing grooves, drum loops, beautiful melodies and later-Genesis worthy songs. Even the “slow” songs have so much energy.
Top 3: Long Way, Don’t Lose My Number, Take Me Home, We Said Hello. What? that is four you say? Damn you, Phil!!

While I’m sure I’ve vacillated many times over the years, Take Me Home is the track I simply don’t want to end. Great feel, and one of the ultimate “Phil Collins drumming “ tracks. The triumvirate that ends the LP listing is just stunning to me, with Doesn’t Anybody Stay Together Anymore almost seeking to provide a mature end to the “divorce songs” that really spoke to 14-year old me: my parents seems to be among the few among my friends still together (and still are after 51 years). The atmospherics of Inside Out are also awesome (even the 80s sax doesn’t ruin it).

I wasn’t alive in the 80’s but I like 80’s music and this album is pure, fun 80’s goodness. I voted for Sussudio because I wasn’t around when it was played out on the radio so to me it’s just a super fun song that gets me pumped and the horns are awesome! The rest of the songs are great too! (Except One More Night. That one just annoys me. Sorry)

An honourable mention must go to the live version of ‘Only You Know and I Know’ from CD2 on the 2016 re-issue of the album. It kicks ass – big time!
That chord change at around 2:22, when the brass kicks in…fantastic!
If you want a track that’ll boost your energy levels while out running, that’ll do it 😉

While I’d love to be all cool and vote for one of my all time fav dark horse tracks like Inside Out or We Said Hello Goodbye (which, because I owned it on vinyl first I still think of as a b-side / bonus track), I have to admit to my myself that I’m just a boring mainstream fan and concede that, really, Take Me Home is just THE highlight of the album and continues to hold up as a timeless, perfectly constructed song.. A transcendent achievement for him, both musically and lyrically, second only to In The Air Tonight as Phil’s consummate anthem. If In The Air Tonight is Phil’s theme song then Take Me Home plays under his end credits. There’s a reason it’s been his go-to concert closer since I first saw him perform it live at The Summit in Houston Texas in 1985. So Take Me Home it is.

I’ve been wanting to propose an episode called, “The Bridges of Genesis County” and I would definitely put Inside Out as a top contender for best musical bridge. But, I don’t think it could topple No Reply At All (IMO).

Inside Out has my vote here though!

Inside Out, no question. The live version only emphasized that this was the best track on this album. The 1990 Serious Tour version is the ultimate version.
Love the podcasts, please keep up the good work…..!!!!
