Fading Lights is one of my favorite songs on We Can’t Dance. It was the first song I wanted to hear upon learning of the death of my mother almost twenty years ago. There is much grace and a power and beauty in their performance which just hits me straight to the heart whenever I hear it. This song provokes a feeling in me much like George Harrison’s demo for While My Guitar Gently Weeps, especially the version from the Love album which had that beautiful string section written by the late great George Martin. I don’t know if it’s just me but I’ve always felt that even though it’s a Tony Banks song it had multiple layers because it became the final Phil Collins song on his final Genesis studio album.
That’s one of the great things about that track – it means so many different things, from what the band was about to go through, to whatever personal meaning the listener takes from it. We’re recording this podcast in a few weeks, so not to spoil anything, but your story isn’t too dissimilar from that of one of the members of the group. – Tom
Fading lights has some of Phil’s best singing, strong and precise. , and it does borrow some vars from Ripples (“far away, away, fading”..).
Great marriage of lyrics and music. Tony has a way to make music and sounds enhance the story, like the way he makes mourning bells at the opening of Evidence Of Autumn , to tell the story of a dying love and breaking heart.
I love Genesis for the way they grew up. Yes, there is nothing here to remind us of “a flower?”. But its a good thing. They are grown ups. Leave the fairy tales to a new generation.
