A buddy of mine taped the album from me back in my early teenage years in the 80’s and I confess it got me to reappraise the group (and specifically the Gabriel era) as I really had only known them as the latter day Collins-led Top 40 group. So without 14 year old me digging songs like “The Conquerer,” not sure I would have ever been inspired to discover albums like SELLING ENGLAND BY THE POUND, FOXTROT, etc.

I have the CD entitled “…And the Word Was…”. According to the liner notes, this consists of the 13 original album tracks, bookended by four extra songs, two at the start and two at the end. these are “Silent Sun”(mono version), “That’s Me”, “A Winter’s Tale” and “One-Eyed Hound”. I expect they will be discussed in the podcast, but I think it’s proper that they were not made part of the poll “What is Your Favorite “From Genesis to Revelation” Track?”

Correct, Bob – the album proper began with Where the Sour Turns to Sweet and ended with A Place to Call My Own. Later CD versions of it included the four tracks you mentioned, which we will discuss toward the end of the show. 🙂

I listened to the recent Genesis – 50 years Ago to reacquaint myself with the songs. All the songs are worthy of consideration. I think 3 songs that were on the original CD issue, One Eyed Hound, Winters Tale and That’s Me should have been included in the choices.

While a far cry from the band that they ultimately became, this album has enough elements in it to keep me engaged. If forced to rank it, FGTR is honestly my least favorite in their discography. That said, I still enjoy it and plan to get the most complete collection of recordings from that period on CD for my personal library.

An aside: the piano introduction to “Window” is one of my favorite bits on the album. It just resonates with me on all the right levels.

Voted for “In hiding”, but the new stereo mix (without strings).
In fact, all the album (and demos) is better without strings and original arrangements

Compared to what the band would later create, FGTR has a very amateurish sound, by turns derivative of the Bee Gees and the Moody Blues. Having said that, though, I still like it better than certain other Genesis albums from their late period. I can hear certain musical ideas that were to be expanded on and more fully realised on later albums, such as the intro to Fireside Song, which
is a close cousin to the opening part of Cinema Show.

I find the thing to do when listening to this album is to try and forget that it’s Genesis, and just enjoy it for what it is – melodic pop with some slightly progressive elements.

Thank you, Nichy! When the episode comes out you’ll hear that I was the lone defender of that track! – Tom
