I Don’t Care Anymore has always been my favourite track off this album. It’s so raw in its power and emotion. Phil is angry and wants everyone to know it!

I Cannot Believe It’s True. Wonderful track from my favourite PC album. The only track I tend to skip over is Do You Know, Do You Care?

Great to see you back and doing a review on one of the most influential albums of my life.

The opening segment of I don’t care anymore/I cannot believe it’s true is just perfection in music form!

Nothing bad on this record .. it’s either good or great!

The only passable solo album from the cheesy crooner. I’d go with It Don’t Matter To Me. It’s kinda mowtown with an interesting beat.

I don’t care anymore with its or energy and furious rage. Those cymbals echoing over the guitar and bass made a mark.

The West Side remains one of my all-time favorites of Phil’s tracks. I’ve always admired his skill first as a drummer, both with Genesis and Brand X. The West Side is a perfect example of his superb drumming ability. I remember the bass drum stabs vibrating my gut the first time I heard it live and it’s been a favorite ever since.

The only song on this recording that’s worth listening to over and over and over again, is The West Side. I have it copied on my running mp3 player five times.

I Don’t Care Anymore. I remember the first time hearing this song was when I literally did not care anymore and it helped me get through that. Of my life.

John .. for me it was a divorce I did not want .. became the ‘theme’ for me for that period.

So I get what you mean.

It is angry yet ‘I don’t care anymore’ but I do really is how I think of it.

So much of Phil’s stuff resonate with fans because they remind us of a particular point in our lives. That’s what he does (did) so well: he became the soundtrack to our lives.

I Don’t Care Anymore may be the obvious choice — and probably will win the poll by a lot. But for me “Like China,” “I Cannot Believe It’s True” and “Thru These Walls” are also up there. I think I first heard this album when I was 12 or 13 and the emotion in the songs really stuck with me.

    First, the close seconds:
“Do You Know, Do You Care?” – So many of Phil’s songs in his early career were comtemplative, “why’d you leave me… you broke my heart” kind of songs… whereas this is just… well, angry, pissed off. This song, played very loud in my car, ensures that I’m losing my voice while singing along.

“Thru These Walls” – despite it basically being Phil’s tame version of Gabriel’s “Intruder”, and despite it basically using the same exact drum fill as the one made infamous in “In the Air Tonight”, this song’s my jam. Kinky Phil kinda works.

However, the winner and still champ is “I Don’t Care Anymore”. A seriously life-changing event for me was when I went into a stereo store so I could fantasize about one day having really nice equipment. I went into that special room, the one with all the high end equipment, the kind I’d never have in my college apartment. An employee came in, and for some reason began chatting me up. “Have you heard of these new things called compact discs?” he asked. “Uh… no.” He directed me to the floor, where I sat in front of speakers the size of my closet. “Check this out.” After learning of my Genesis affliction, he popped in “Hello… I Must Be Going.” Instantly, Phil started popping around the kit. It sounded… perfect. No hiss. No noise. None of that snap, crackle, or pop you’d get with a vinyl record. I was three feet away from Phil’s kit. It was immaculate. I knew right then I’d never buy another record. The song was unique, the kind of a song only a drummer could write. I was hooked.

Infectious rhythm, impeccable performance by the entire band and (despite the lyrics) the most feelgood song Phil ever recorded.

What a fantastic Second album, different styles and tempos. I don’t cre anymore is just so powerful, music and vocal performance, with Don’t let him steal your heart away a very close second. B side has to go to And so to f. Just so upbeat and the extended intro you can find on YouTube, it should have made it to the record itself. Perfect!

The funny thing is I found this choice harder than any previous albums. It is an album full of high quality songs that have stood the test of time. I finally went for “Don’t let him steal your heart away”. The reasons are quite personal but I heard it once and realised that someone was trying to steal my heart away from my wife. She was very clever and was in the words of Phil (just changing from he to she).

“She was there at the right time with the right smile
Just a shoulder to lean on
Someone to tell you it’ll all work out alright”….

Luckily just in time I saw what was happening and got out of the situation before she could wreck my marriage. I love my wife so much and we have our 40th anniversary in two years but it easily might not have been so!

So every time I hear this song I go back to the day and the moment I realised what was happening to me. As so often before Phil was so clever at writing exactly the right words. He has truly provided the soundtrack to my life.

This was the first Genesis-related album I fell in love with. My cousin burned me cassette copies (remember those days?) of No Jacket Required, Hello, and Face Value back in 1985. I enjoyed No Jacket, but I connected with Hello. “Do You Know, Do You Care” and “I Don’t Care Anymore” got me through my teens when every perceived slight is a cause for high emotion. 37 years later (wow!) the entire album is something I treasure, with “Why Can’t It Wait ‘Til Morning” becoming much more moving to me now that I’m older and, hopefully, wiser. All that being said, “Like China” gets my vote. The song is just plain fun! And particularly fun to belt out in the shower!

Welcome aboard, Hector! That intro was the genius of Simon – Mama, Watcher, and a bit of the Duchess intro. 🙂

Thanks for the response!!! I was just listening to the “Duke” episode when Simon gave the answer. Truly genius mash up Simon!
Awesome show, by the way, I listen to it repeatedly. Keep it up!

There are two or three I could have gone for but ultimately I went with Don’t Let him Steal your Heart Away. The song that resonates most with me. Such a simple song but classic Phil. Love the feel of the drums. Close second is Westside followed by I don’t care anymore! Drums on Westside are amazing! Used to have an old VHS of Live at Perkins Palace and would watch Westside over and over.
Phil doesn’t rate this album but I definitely do! My original copy was on cassette, followed by CD and now Vinyl! Not his best album (that being Face Value) but not too far off !!

It was a choice between three songs for me, and in a sense I feel like I threw them metaphorically in the air (tonight – wrong album, I know) and chose one.

It could have been Do You Know Do You Care, Thru These Walls, or I Don’t Care Anymore.

I went with Thru These Walls for the progressive arrangement. Yes, I suppose that it is similar in places to Intruder, but it’s more than just that. There is contrast, and movement, as well as those lyrics, not to mention that melody.

I cannot believe it’s true that I hadn’t listened to this album for about twenty years, when it’s much better than I remember.

Just remove You Can’t Hurry Love, which would have been a better non-album single release to my mind, because it doesn’t fit with the rest of the material.

So many to choose from. Phil does bitter love songs better than anyone, and this album is chock full. One might think I’d be tired of it by now, but I Don’t Care Anymore is the best track here.

I chose The West Side as it always reminds me of my first trip from England to the USA. It was one of the tracks on a compilation tape I made (Along with Back In NYC). It’s eternally linked in my mind to walking at night around Navy Pier and the Buckingham Fountain in Chicago. Not sure if Phil intended it to have an American vibe but It sound like a movie soundtrack to me.

It Don’t Matter to Me. Feels like a terribly underrated song in his catalog. He swung for the fences with the rhythmic play of the horn section and drums and the song structure is pop on steroids. Never get tired of it.

I Don’t Care Anymore. Beside being the most popular track, it’s utterly amazing in it’s structure and it’s performance. Do You Know Do You Care? is also great, but will have to settle for 2nd place.
