Hard to choose between Broadway Melody, Back in NYC and Carpet Crawlers. I voted for the latter because it’s the most Genesis like of the three but I love the eggs and energy to the other two though the whole Lamb thing was a massive let down at theme. It felt like Genesis had sold out to become popular in the USA. It’s a rubbish concept.

When did you guys first listen to this album in relation to the others?

You have to mention that Carpet Crawlers is one of two Genesis songs titled after a euphemism for sperm. See if anyone knows the other.

Back in NYC is the best song on the album by the way.

Too many to choose so I voted for the first one I thought of, though I could have easily chosen Fly, Supernatural or Back in NYC

Tough call but feel The Lamia really captures the Lamb groove.

Tough choice between this and The Lamia, but Counting Out Time gets the nod.
Been looking forward to this episode for ages!

You should have a separate vote for each disc. But if I must pick one song, it’s Gabriel’s foreshadowing of his first couple solo albums. Genesis’ grittiest song. Ever. 😎

This is a tough one, there’s so many highs on the album – and one or two lows, too.
But because the actual SONGS are the main point with Genesis, I think Anyway represents it perfectly. Among many others 🙂

Not an easy choice to make. A different day or mood and I could easily choose another track. Most of my choices would from sides 1 and 2 of the first LP. Although Lilith, Anyway, Anaesthetist, Scree, and It are tops for me too. It’s a hard album to disect in that way.

Of course this album is so strong from start to finish, it’s tough to pick a favorite. For me Back in NYC always gets me going regardless of the day, mood, or situation.

Arrrrggghhhh!!!! Too hard!!!! The double album has too many great songs to choose from. Alas, I voted for “The Lamia” but nearly any song from the first side of the LP could be a close challenger, plus numerous others like “Back in NYC.” Sigh…

It’s the classic Genesis formula of great driving drums, keyboard, and bass.

My apologies for the lack of originality, wit and/or wisdom.

Ok… that was way more difficult than I thought! I’ll admit that my first exposure to The Lamb was via Three Sides Live, so that somewhat colors my choices. My initial pick was “In The Cage”, and I’ve always loved “Fly on a Windshield” for its sheer power, possibly as hard as Genesis has ever sounded. Having been blessed enough to see their last show ever at the Hollywood Bowl in ’07, “Carpet Crawlers” holds a special place in my heart. However, due to its inclusion in the “In The Cage” Three Sides Live medley, and because it’s so epic, I’m going for “The Colony of Slippermen”. I mean, where else are you going to hear the word “Slubberdegullions”? Every great Genesis album has that one track that is quintessentially them; for me, “Slippermen” is it.

This is a difficult pick as all the tracks properly flow into the next. The Lamia just edges out 3-5 other favorite tracks. The only song I’ve never really liked is IT, which is a somewhat disappointing ending to an otherwise masterpiece.

It’s so hard to vote for just one! Nearly each song resonates with me in a different way.

    Keep the tabletop discussions coming!

Wish they played Back in NYC more live. Love the angrier vocals. Very different, but very Genesis.

Great to see you guys are finally going to discuss Genesis Mammoth, “The Lamb.”

Picking a favorite track is super difficult on this, but I went with Back in NYC, maybe for no other reason, but how much Kevin Gilbert’s cover in some ways made that song an all-time favorite of mine. The dynamics are so great on it.

It was nearly impossible to narrow down to my one favorite, but I decided to go with “The Lamia.” It’s just a real gem of a song. Wonderful lyrics, beautiful piano playing, slick guitar work, punchy drums. I remember seeing Steve Hackett play that in concert in Albany, back in 2013. One of my favorite moments of the show.

There are more complicated songs on the Lamb but in my opinion there is nothing nearly as sublime as The Carpet Crawlers – on this or any album for that matter.

This may be a heresy but this is my least favourite PG era album. Some individual tracks are obviously career highlights but the filler songs and the ill conceived narrative let the album down. In many ways this album is more dated, in presentaion at least, than Invisible Touch.
That said, the drums sound incredible and the band certainly play with conviction, even if the end result is artistically uneven.
Love hearing you guys, your podcast is a joy to listen to!!

Just found your podcast! I was fortunate to see either the first or second show of the “Lamb” tour when I was in high school in Chicago. I’d been a huge fan and it was my first time seeing Genesis, and not the last! Still a big fan all these years later. Thanks for the show.

Between the title track, The Carpet Crawlers, Anyway, and Riding the Scree, I am a very happy Genesis fan.. but that all said, probably my personal favorite track is Broadway Melody of 1974.

I have very mixed feelings about this album. It is a time capsule back to my high school days (I didn’t discovery this album until nearly six years after its initial release). While it isn’t the best of the Gabriel years, it is still a milestone of epic proportions, and I really appreciate the scope of its ambitions.

Can’t imagine what the impact of Gabriel’s presence on A Trick of the Tail would have been had he remained with the band, but I am glad things worked out for everyone in the end.

The Lamb was the first pre 1980 Genesis Album that I experienced. I was introduced to it by my now ex-husband. He had an extensive Genesis Album collection that I inherited I’m the divorce.

I was mesmerized by the power and intensity of song like “Back in N.Y.C.” and “In the Cage.” I really loved hearing another side to a band I already enjoyed.

“Carpet Crawlers” is such an emotional song with beautiful Melody that I was immediately hooked. I took to memorizing the lyrics on this song and others on the album, because I’m a lyrics girl. I found it tricky and on subsequent albums trickier. I connected with the way the lyrics were delivered.

Also, you have to admit that “Counting Out Time” is hilarious. When I first heard it I said to myself, “I’ve heard this before.” I’m sure it was in a TV commercial when I was a kid. I can’t remember which one.

Last but not least, I really connect with “Chamber of 32 Doors.” I have been through some painful transitions in my life and I really think the lyrics and music convey that feeling of being the crossroads. Love the lyrics,”…I’d rather trust a country man than a town man.”

I’m ready for The Lamb Podcast Part 1. But no pressure. Wink.
