Road to Joy – it felt like a real high energy song, not the typical brooding pretentious music that Peter has made post 80’s

Oh man, this is hard. I’ve become so attached to a lot of these songs because I’ve gotten to enjoy them in depth each month over 2023. But I’ve got to go with “i/o.” The chorus is so warm and uplifting and the lyrics are so creative.

This was a close one for me. That bridge at the end is so powerful and moving it brings me to tears, especially if I’m listening to it really loud.

Yes, the sheer beauty and poignancy of the lyrics and that majestic last couple of minutes are really moving. Not that the songs are alike, but it brings me to the verge of tears and leaves me with a similar epic impression as San Jacinto.

At the moment, Four Kinds Of Horses is really growing on me. If all the songs I wasn’t sold on at first that impressed me in the live setting at the Detroit Show, Four Kinds Of Horses really was one that made me have to revisit that song again and it’s one I look forward to when listening to i/o!

It’s shifted around a few times since listening to the album for the first time, but Olive Tree is probably my favourite at the moment. The contrast between the deep verses and the bright choruses makes this song really stand out for me, but a week from now it will most likely be completely different.

Love can heal is perfect in every way… Four kind of horses is second on the list for me, the chorus is infectious…I/o would be third on the list. Thanks for the brilliant podcast!

I/O is the one because I cannot stop singing or humming it. It drives my teenaged daughter nuts! My singing that is not the song which she actually doesn’t mind.

Playing for Time. I liked the unfinished work-in-progress version without proper lyrics on the BackToFront tour, I love the completed song. Amazing, awesome crescendo towards the end.

    Road to Joy.

It had just come out before I saw him in Birmingham (UK). He played it during the soundcheck which I got a special invite to. It really bounces along and I like the artwork.

Album of the year, no question.

I voted for Four Kinds of Horses with it’s mesmorizing groove and haunting lyrics. but This is Home and Live and Let Live were close contenders.

I picked “Road to Joy”. It’s one of those songs that makes you groove while driving.

As much as I love this song, anyone else think Road to Joy sounds like a mash up between “The Tower That Ate People” & “Kiss That Frog”?

Substitute the lyrics with “Sweet lit-tle princess let me introduce his frogness.”

I voted Panapticom because it’s the one I can sing off the top of my head. The others are all good but they start to blend together.

Playing for time. I had to pull over to the side of the road listening to this song…twice …while driving to work. It hit really hard for some reason. Gonna miss hearing new songs every 28 days. Happy holidays and happy new year!

Other songs may be more “catchy” or emotionally charged, but every time that Four Kinds of Horses comes on the rotation, I just stop whatever I’m doing and am transfixed. I consider it a later day achievement by Pete in the same-category-but-different-era as, say, Intruder, Rhythm of the Heat or A Different Drum in that way… Certainly more subtle than those examples, perhaps, but it makes me stop and listen the way those did when they were new to me.

When I first heard it, I assumed he was obliquely referring to the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I later learned he was referencing a somewhat sinister Buddhist parable. I’ve decided it’s both in my listening as they both point to an overlap of religion and violent extremism to me… and chills run through me every time I listen to it.

Brilliantly done, Peter… Still! After all these years!
